The USS Zumwalt is a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy and is the Navy's newest warship. The Navy League needed a website and CMS as part of the ship's commissioning ceremony and continued marketing efforts.
It was important to establish a consistent, cohesive UI kit for the website since the brand was pretty ambiguous. I chose to go with a bold color palette from the ship's badge, as well as rounded, friendly elements which felt modern and easy to navigate — much like the ship itself.
I worked as the UI Designer on this project alongside of a project manager who coordinating the outsourcing of the development of this project after I handed off mockups, wires and the UI kit. The Navy League did not have an established brand for the warship and was positively receptive to my interpretation of the brand in a digital platform.
This is an example of a paragraph set in 16pt Open Sans regular. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse varius enim in eros elementum tristique. Duis cursus, mi quis viverra ornare, eros dolor interdum nulla, ut commodo diam libero vitae erat. Aenean faucibus nibh et justo cursus id rutrum lorem imperdiet. Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.
After considering the audience of mainly older individuals, I chose to focus on a modern, easy-to-read format. The main request of The Navy League was to feature a continuously looping video of the ship powering through the ocean on the homepage as the background for the first section.
Considering the rich history of the USS Zumwalt's namesake, it was important to present information and photography of him and to speak to his accomplishments in the military social sphere.
Because the website was ultimately to operate as a CMS for The Navy League to use for their continued marketing efforts beyond the commissioning, I created a modular template with elements which could easily be swapped out for a refreshed look and feel without needing to consult the developers.
